Gundam Theme Rings Out at Tokyo Train Station

March 20, 2008

Board a train at Kami-Igusa Station in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward, and instead of some dull chime informing you the doors are closing, you’ll hear the strains of “Fly, Gundam,” the theme song to the original “Mobile Suit Gundam.”

The new chime will be unveiled Sunday in honor of Sunrise, the production company behind Gundam, which is located in Kami-Igusa, as a result of cooperation between Sunrise, the ward and Seibu Rail. Shops in the nearby arcade already sell Gundam merchandise and raise Gundam flags.

This is part of a larger anime cross-promotion program by Seibu. Starting March 15 and for the duration of spring vacation, Seibu is running trains on the Shinjuku Line that bear a special Gundam headmark. These programs, Anime! Anime! reports, come from the location of the new Seibu lines in Suginami and Nerima wards, where many anime studios are concentrated.
