Film on the Plaza: Battleship Yamato
Personally I’ve always been a huge fan of this series; not only is it just fun to watch, it holds a huge place in Anime culture found within the United States. Although it was first broadcast in Japan in 1974, it found its way to the U.S. in 1979 and provided audiences here with the first real Anime with an over-arching plot. It also paved the way for Anime with more adult oriented and darker themes. Not only does it hold historical significance, as I mentioned earlier, it also is very fun to watch, not only because of the animation style, but also because of the engaging story and retro feel to it. And how can you forget the unique ship found in the series, based on the original Yamato from World War II? I’ve always thought that was so cool. I’m sure there’s nothing like gathering with fellow fans in the heart of Little Tokyo to catch a free outdoor screening of this classic Anime!
