“The Phoenix” appears at the Kyoto International Manga Museum

September 25, 2009

The Phoenix was unveiled recently to a crowd of about 150 people. The Phoenix is huge; it measures 11 meters in width and 4.5 meters in height. With it’s wings spread wide, it is truly an amazing sight.

The sculpture was created by Mitsuaki Sudo with red pine and glass for the eyes, using traditional Buddhist techniques. It took six months to complete.

Take a look at this picture of the original Hi no Tori. This was one of Osamu Tezuka’s first works, and first appeared in 1954, in manga form. It has been very popular ever since, and helped Osamu-san become one of the most successful (most successful what?). Being such a very well known figure in Japan, I think it is very exciting that they created such a large portrayal to display. I can’t wait to see it in person! =D
