Goodbye, Usui-san

October 2, 2009

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to touch on this earlier, but the famous manga-ka, Yoshito Usui, best known for the manga and anime series Crayon Shinchan, passed away recently. I personally count Usui-san as one of my heroes, as through his work, I learned a lot of things about growing up. Crayon Shinchan touched me in a way that few other works ever have.

After going away for a daylong mountain climbing trip, Usui failed to return home, and a search was subsequently started. Unfortunately, about a week later, he was found dead at the bottom of a cliff in the mountains he was climbing. For many of my generation, this was a shock, as many of us have grown up with Shinchan.

I recently found this video on YouTube. It is a video giving thanks to Usui-san, and conveys the shock felt by so many very well. While I have watched and read much more sophisticated manga and anime by now, I still watch Crayon Shinchan from time to time, and find it has aged very well. The new episodes have never lost quality compared to the old and I always find myself laughing out loud. Crayon Shinchan can be enjoyed by children, as well as adults, which is one of the reasons I think it is so popular. Many people nowadays however, do not want their children seeing it as it is considered to be a bit vulgar. Regardless of what people think, Crayon Shinchan has taught me about the importance of family, friends, given me many laughs, and even brought me to tears on numerous occasions over the years. If you haven’t seen this classic work yet, I strongly recommend you check it out. Crayon Shinchan helped me become the person I am today. Thank you Usui-san. Otsukaresamadeshita.
