Nifty Thrifty Tour (Early December)

We're pinching the pennies for this tour! Explore Japan using the scenic train route as we use our "Seishun Juhachi Kippu" - a ticket that allows us to go all across Japan but excludes Express and/or Bullet trains! We'll be taking it slow going from Tokyo, to Kamakura, to Nokogiri, to Nikko, and making stops in between. We'll also be staying at hostels, or lodging places much like an inn, so we can save on accommodations! Join us for a highly active, city hopping, train travelling tour of Japan that will let you see what tourists usually spend $3,000 or more to see for a whole lot less!

Tour Itinerary

  • Departure! [-]

We board a plane for our wild adventure in Japan! Kick back, eat the in-flight meal, and take a nap... you'll need the rest!

  • The Arrival! [-]

After getting our money changed at the airport, we'll hop on a train - the first of many on our journey - for a ride to our hostel. After getting settled in, you'll be free to explore your surroundings or, if you like, join us for an optional side trip to Tokyo Tower to admire Tokyo's illuminated evening skyline.

  • Tokyo Unplugged [-]

Our journey today takes us on a quick tour of the places that make Tokyo famous. We'll start in Asakusa at the famed Kaminarimon Gate, where you can shop for traditional goods and snacks or just visit the serenity of the shrines and temples of the area. Following that, we'll journey back to the present with a stop in the electronics and geekery paradise of Akihabara. We'll cap the day in Shibuya, the famed commercial area where shoppers, trendsetters, and party people mingle, shop, and eat to their heart's content. If you're game, continue your evening at the famous Roppongi Kingyo Drag Show, where some very talented "ladies" will take to the stage to deliver a song and dance performance that you won't soon forget!

  • Freedom! [-]

Tomorrow we'll be setting off on a journey across Japan, so this day is free for you to do whatever you like in Tokyo. Your tour guide will be on hand to help you with directions to wherever you might want to go. Need a bit more structure? Sign up for an optional side tour to the Ghibli Museum or the Joypolis video arcade!

  • Westward bound [-]

After checking out of our first hostel, we'll set our gaze to the west as we head for Kamakura, the "Kyoto of the Kanto Area" to explore shrines, temples, and sample some of the fine local cuisine. After that, we'll engage in some traditional fun in the hot spring town of Ito, where your hostel comes with a hot spring bath that will help soothe the soul (and your feet) after a long day of exploring. You'll also get to experience a fantastic view of the ocean and the river that runs through the hot spring village where we'll spend the night!

  • From the Sea to the Mountains! [-]

You just spent an evening admiring the sea - now you get to cross it! After another train ride, we'll board a ferry and cross Tokyo Bay to the foot of Mt. Nokogiri. After a lunch break, we'll take a ropeway car up the side of the mountain and explore the tree tunnels, hidden statues, and spectacular views available from Nihonji, the temple at the mountain summit. After coming down from the mountain, we'll head to the city of Chiba to rest up for a brief return to the Tokyo area the next day.

  • Mad about Manga [-]

Today, we take a side trip to the artificial island of Odaiba to attend Haru Comic City, a large doujinshi "sales event" where you can buy fan produced parody and original manga directly from the artists.

  • It's Hard to Say Goodbye! [-]

Transfer to the airport, return home, and tell your friends how much fun you had!
